Released in 1994, Green Day’s third album (and first with a major label) ‘Dookie’ really kickstarted the pop-punk movement.
At the time it was written the band was bored, sexually frustrated and a bit anxious, and it sure does come out in this raw, angsty, gem of a record.
It took pop-punk to a new level and found nearly 20 million fans. It still is the bands best selling album (and best sounding in my opinion).
The big hit ‘Longview’ has a killer bassline, with never a truer line sung in rock history; “When masturbation’s lost it’s fun/You’re fucking lonely”. ‘Basket Case’ was nominated for a Grammy and rightly so, with singer Billie Joe Armstrong’s vocals dripping with slacker agitation.
A lot of the songs on this album have the guitar tuned half a step down, giving them that signature ‘garage’ sound. Personally, I think it is the most important pop-punk record ever made.
Check it out. Revel in these golden three-minute bursts of suburban frustration!
